Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Not exactly sure what they want me to say here, so I'll just pick a few key points: I like writing. I like reading. I am seventeen, cynical (but not overbearingly so), and constantly infuriated by the fact that high school has no emphasis on actually teaching people the English language. I really don't care about someone's analysis of Brave New World if they can't spell 'satirical'.
I don't rush beta-ing. I can correct spelling and punctuation within seconds, but if I think there's a specific sentence that doesn't fit in with the tone, for example, I'll take great care in changing it without imposing too much of my own style on the author's. And changes like that, I'll gladly discuss with the author first, and they need not take all my suggestions on board.
Just recently I faced a several hours-long dilemma because I realised I wasn't sure whether it was 'enquired' or 'inquired'. Not knowing how to spell something really bugs me.
Basically, I'm nice, I won't bite anyone's head off, and I'm equally capable of beta-ing.
I am also a Smartania fan. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As I've said, I'm nice. I'm cynical but I'm not mean; not aloof, but easy to get along with. Spelling and punctuation have always come easily to me. I take my time going through things and don't edit without serious consideration.
Even though I'm cynical, I'm not one of those people who will read a romantic story and go, "Pfft, yeah, because the world is REALLY like that." I've got a geat life and I know that geat things can happen, and I generally can draw a good line between sweet and sappy, realistic and unrealistic.
I also know Jujitsu, Ninjutsu, and speak some German. Do those count as strengths here? |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I like fanfiction with lots of dialogue and relatively short paragraphs, so if I'm faced with a very long, purple prose-ish paragraph, I may zone out slightly. I just hate reading long paragraphs on my computer. Reminds me of reading Jane Austen.
And this isn't exactly a weakness, but I suppose it should be mentioned anyway: I'm Aussie, so you'll have to excuse me if I add a 'u' where you don't like it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I don't have any preferences at all, except it may be better for your story if it's from a fandom with which I'm familiar. I can't exactly list all the fandoms I know back to front, but if you want to ask if I know your fandom, go ahead.
I actually really miss reading fanfiction in which there are no pairings, only a really awesome plot. I'm all for reading pairings, but there's only so many times you can read about Sasuke brooding about secretly being in love with Naruto without wondering whether anyone watches or reads Naruto for the story. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Furries, genderbending and Mpreg scare me. |
