Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I like to be detailed in my comments. I will tell you why I liked something or didn't like something, and if it's a mistake I've noticed, I will do my best to explain why that sentence structure didn't work or why that punctuation was misused. I also like to examine stories on a character level. If I think something is out of character, I will bring it to your attention, though in a situation like that, it's ultimately up to you to make the choices. My hope is that writers will feel encouraged and informed by my comments. It's never my intention to come off rude, because I always have the most sincere desire to see writers improve. I am usually pretty positive and optimistic. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am good at spotting grammar mistakes and punctuation errors. I am also very encouraging. When I feel that you've done something right, I won't hesitate to tell you so and explain why it was good. Often, when I note a mistake of some kind, I will offer a simple example of a substitute. This is not because I am trying to write your story for you, but simply because I feel it's easier to understand when there is a model to which you can compair your mistake and note the difference. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Spelling can be easily missed by me. And I might be considered too soft by some. I like to point out the good, more than the bad. Some people don't appreciate that, I suppose. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like drama, romance, or angst. I like stories that show good friendships or character emotions. I like to read stories that highlight my favorite characters, but I'm not limited to such stories. I like Newkirk (Hogan's Heroes); Ducky, Abby, Gibbs (NCIS), Clarisse, Joseph (Princess Diaries), Charles (MASH), Illya (Man from UNCLE). So I am more likely to enjoy reading your story if you highlight any of these characters. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't prefer to do a lot of torture stories. And you don't want me to beta your slash stories. I also don't take kindly to heavy swearing or graphically sexual scenes. |
