Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
'Ello! I've been a writer of fan-fiction since 2005, though I only started to post on this website earlier this year. I've been reading fan-fiction for almost six years now and have acquired a taste for what the general audience wants to see in a story. I've taken two creative writing classes at the local JC and have learned how to make a story more appealing to a reader... how to establish ethos/pathos for the characters, how to write appropriate dialogue, how to create an attention-grabbing first sentence, etc. If you're looking for a beta to be "kindly critical" (meaning, someone who will make helpful suggestions as opposed to listing everything you've done wrong), then I'm your girl! I'll never rewrite your work but instead will give you a few examples as to how you might make something flow better. I'm most able to help authors of "Pirates of the Caribbean" fiction. Feel free to read anything I've written before asking for my help, to see if my writing style appeals to you and what you're trying to write. I've also written stories for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and though you won't find any of them here, I'm more than willing to help with that, too. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Character development is my area of expertise. I'm quite good at getting inside a character's head, whether they're the hero, the villain, the damsel, whatever. I'm good at describing emotions and developing motivations. When it comes to the fan-fiction I write, I believe in staying true to the character as orignially written while adding a touch of creative license to make it work for you and your story. I know the characters I write for and if you need someone to guide you with how they might behave, or what they might say or do in certain situations, I'm glad to help.
In terms of genre, I am a true romantic. I know how to write those mushy love stories that make you go "awww!" |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I've only written smut twice, so I'm probably not the best beta when it comes to bedroom scenes. I am human and sometimes I overlook spelling and grammar mistakes while in a hurry to get a story or a chapter posted, but by no means frequently. I'm not too good with stories that end sadly, as they make me feel sad myself. Poetry is not my thing, so I won't be able to help you there, either. I like reading parodies, though I suck at writing them, so I probably can't help with those. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I am a Sparrabeth shipper, so any stories featuring Jack and Elizabeth as a romantically involved couple work best for me, though I'm happy to help any Willabeth shippers, as well. Jack/OC, Jack/Anamaria stories are also welcome, as well as many others. I don't have a lot of requirements in terms of what genre/ship you're writing for. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
PLEASE, no character-deaths where Jack or Elizabeth is the one who bites the bullet! (I'm such a wuss, they make me cry every time!) Unless they're not really dead and/or you plan on resurrecting them somehow, please don't send me any of those! I also don't read Davy Jones/Calypso stories, any slash stories, or Barbossa/anyone stories. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing against the guy, and I have no problem with him being a character in a story, but thinking of him being romantic kind of gives me the creeps... I also don't read stories with real people "falling" into the movie. |
