Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a long time fanfiction writer and reader. I'm quick to pick up grammatical mistakes, formatting issues, and plot holes. When I read, I ask myself a lot of questions: why is this happening? Where did that person go? What does that mean? and like to see a story going somewhere. Obscure references and odd similies/metaphors make me happy.
I'm also a big fan of short/sudden/flash/slice of life fiction and one-shots; chaptered fics are good, but when an author can make you experience whatever it is they're writing, shock you, make you laugh, or make you think in only a few words and paragraphs-that is something worth sharing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good with dialogue. Humor and horror are two things in life I seek out (in movies, reading, etc.), so I have lots of exposure to what is good/what works in both genres versus what doesn't. Also, I'm tolerant of OCs. Obvious Mary Sues I'll call you on, but very well written OCs are a joy.
I also have a medical background, so I can help guide writers into putting realistic effects of drugs, trauma, treatments, etc. on characters. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have a hard time with very long, technical information. I just don't "get it" and wouldn't know if what you're talking about is real/correct, or if you were just pulling my chain. I will also admit that I may be familiar with one version of a fandom (for example: X-men movie vs. X-men comics), so specifying exactly which universe you're working in is appreciated to keep closer to canon. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Humor and horror, as stated above. Fantasy I give a long leash to; I'm willing to accept many allowances as long as they're logical in their world. Angst is a personal favorite of mine. What better way to show you love a character than to drag him/her through nightmares and back? Ratings from K to M(A) are fine, as are both het and slash relationships. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Going along with the "I'm a little slow when it comes to technology", hard science-fiction I can't do. I don't read crime or mysteries, so I'm also not up on what is good or not good in the genres. |
