Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hello, my name is Ellie. I've been proofreading for about 3 years, though I have yet to post a profile on a beta service. I'm a fairly critical proofreader- I correct all grammatical mistakes that I find, and I *do* give my opinion on plot development, characterization, and character interaction. I'm a stickler for canon characterization, but if there is a believable reason for change- for example, the character's lover has died- then I'll go with it. I also need there to be consistent characterization throughout the story itself. By consistent characterization, I mean, don't have the character crying hysterically in one scene and then bravely leading troops to battle the next.
My return time is about a week, depending on what I have going on in life. If you have a specific posting day, please let me know.
I'll beta for the following fandoms: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel, Bones, Supernatural, Gilmore Girls, Harry Potter, House, Twilight, and several other small book fandoms.
I beta all pairings- both slash and het. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at catching grammatical mistakes. I'm also good with characterization, and character relationships. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not very strong with dialogue- I'll always tell you if it comes of as unnatural, but my suggestion may not be the best, since it's something I struggle with in my own writing. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
-I prefer the stories have grammar decent enough to be readable. Obviously, it doesn't have to be perfect, or even close to it- that's why I'm here- but if I can't understand it, then I can't beta it. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
-Stories that go overboard on angst. By overboard, I mean attempted suicide, self-harm, and the like. If it's a part of the plot, I'll read it, but if the story is clearly just about the misery of the character, the I prefer not to read it. I *do* read dark stories, just not, for lack of a better term, emo ones.
-Stories that overboard on fluff. I need there to be some sort of conflict in order to enjoy a story.
-Character bashing/Character worship stories. By character bashing, I mean stories that have the character acting OoC and exaggerate his/her faults in order to portray him/her as unlikable. By character worship stories, I mean stories that exaggerate virtues and have the other characters spend the rest of the time enumerating their wrongdoings to the main character.
I probably sound picky, but I'm really not. I'll read most anything- both slash and het- but these are just general guidelines to things that make *me* facepalm and click the magic X when I'm reading a story. |
