Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Greetings, Quester of Beta-Readers! 'Tis I, Amputation! If you choose me as your beta, all I ask is for a short summary of the story, how much help/what kind of help you want, and a goal of accomplishment for your story. It doesn't have to be an essay! Also, if the story has yet to be posted, give me a brief chapter summary instead of an entire summary. It will make both of our lives easier. I will read through your chapters very meticulously and often two or three times. What I mark up is simply a suggestion, and you do NOT have to agree with me! My only wish is to improve your writing talent and bring your stories to as close to perfection as possible. You may simply need a push to get chapters out and published, a grammar scanner, or even a harsh over-the-shoulder editor. I can be any or all of the preceeding. My help is ONLY to maximize your writing skill. I work with you in hopes that someday you will no longer need my services and reach the end on your own. I am as much of a crutch as I am a friend. Choose your beta wisely, and to thine own self, be true. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I've been writing and reading for the longest time and my window of knowledge is large. I am dedicated and very, very fast. I try to read and get back to you with comments as soon as I can. More than likely, it will be within two to three days. I am meticulous about repeated words! If you use the same word multiple times or have a limited vocabulary, let me know and you can count on me to open that thesaurus and find better ones. Homophones and Homonyms are tricky, I get it. If you find yourself getting stuck with words such as "sight" and "site", or "they're", "their", and "there", I'm your woman, although it is one of my biggest pet peeves in literature. Flow is important. I will do my best to accentuate the natural rhythm of the story, or help you develop one. DESCRIPTION, DESCRIPTION, DESCRIPTION! If you need to capture the emotion of a specific character in a specific scene, I can help you make that image come alive. Adjectives and setting scenes are some of my favorite tasks in writing. Symbols, Motifs, and Themes, OH MY! If you have a theme reoccurring throughout the story, let me know what it is. Symbolism is a powerful way to consistently and subconsciously keep readers interested. Mary-Sues and Gary-Stus. Gosh, don't you hate them? I have a near-foolproof system to eradicate them from your lives if you find yourself at an impasse with character creation. And finally, just in general editing. I've been doing this my whole life. Whatever you need, I'll do my best to fix it. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Sometimes I rush. It's not that I don't like your story, but sometimes I have a lot on my plate (college, for one) and I know I just need to get through it. I am only human, so of course I'm going to make mistakes, and sometimes I miss things. Hopefully, it will not occur often. Sometimes, when I'm reading, I get harsh, even when I know I shouldn't. When I start to like something, I get more critical in attempts to make it as good as possible. Forgive me if this happens, I will remedy myself. Sometimes, I want to add a character of my own into the story. I refrain from doing so simply because it is not my story and I am only the editor. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'll beta read anything, really. Just make sure it has a good plot and the characters are IN CHARACTER and interesting. I DO BETA SLASH/YAOI/YURI. It is not my favorite, but I understand that love comes in all forms. I am not as experienced in yuri, but I can do my best. Just make sure it's not pure smut. That doesn't belong here on FF.net, even if the fiction is rated M. That goes on AdultFanFiction.net.
Series I currently LOVE: Merlin (TV), Bleach (Anime), Big Bang Theory (TV), and Naruto (Anime).
Pairings I prefer: NaruHina (Naruto), Shenny (BBT), IchiRuki (Bleach) and UlquiHime (Bleach). I will beta other pairings, but these are my favorites. If you have one of these, count me in! |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Really, really dramatic and over-the-top stories are not fun for me. If that is what yours is, don't make me your first choice. CORRECT SPELLING AND CAPITALIZATION IS A MUST. For the love of chocolate, I cannot STAND when even the summary of a fiction is in poor form. Please, please, PLEASE don't ask me if you can't capitalize or spell something basic to the fandom! Slapped together stories are a waste of time and I will not read them. There are too many of them on FF.net already. Put more effort into what you write, for yourself and everyone else's sake. |
