Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a reasonable beta-reader (at least, I like to think so) - I'll accept pretty much anything to beta, and I know that as an author, perfection is nigh on impossible to achieve. If you tell me what in particular you want to check, I'll do my best to help you with that - whether you want to check the people are in character, or make sure the story reads nicely and isn't bogged down with description or jumping everywhere too fast, or just a check for typos etc.
If I find a bit I don't like, I'll tell you a) What and where it is in the text, b) Why I don't think it worked, and c) Some suggestions of ways of dealing with it. If I think the whole story needs reworking, or the plot needs more consideration, then bear in mind I won't be afraid to tell you that - I won't force you to rewrite the whole thing by any means, but I'll point it out.
If you'd like me to beta for you, then I ask that you tell me the effect your going for - if you're aiming for a particular style and I don't realise that, obviously I can't beta it properly - and that you give me at least a couple of days to return your story. I am only human, and I do have real life banging on my door with harpoons every now and then. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
English language - always useful in writing - is something I'm good at, particularly words and phrases, so if you'd like help on prose, or on grammar of any sort, I'm very happy to. I'm also quite methodical - good at checking for consistency, looking for any plot-holes, etc, and I'm good at the knowledge and background side of things, which I often find gets overlooked. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Fluff and sap; makes me go all goey and destroys any higher brain functions such as criticism. I can also be a little nit-picky sometimes; if that's the case, then by all means tell me and I'll try not to. |

I can do most genres, both one-shots and longer, and also things like crossovers, creature fics, AUs, time travel/dimension hopping etc. I have no fear of slash, death, gore, abuse etc (although please warn me if it's going to be slightly beyond the norm). For chaptered stories, I prefer something with a good structured plot, rather than some of the more philosophical character exploring fics out there. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Original character centric stories, or wildly out of character stories, fluff and sappiness (I love reading it, but don't have a clue how to beta it), stories outside my fandoms (see above), excessive or unreasonable angst (but reasonable angst, like if someone died, I don't mind), soap or sit-com style stories. |
