Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
What I do as a beta reader: My main focus as a beta-reader is to increase the diction level [or decrease when necessary] of a story. I then check for any spelling or grammatical errors, formatting errors or changes that need to be made, and lastly, I check for the incharacter-ness of a story, if I am familiar with the fandom. I will beta just about anything as long as there is a clear point to the story. I don't care if the point of the story is indiscriminate killing, ramblings of a deranged mind, smut, or even fluffy-bunny-huggling-Mary-sue-bashing-Out-Of-Character-Just-For-The-Hell-Of-It-must-see-how-many-curse-words-I-can-use-in-one-sentence horribleness, as long as there is a point. If your character is Mary-sue, expect to hear about it. If your plotline has so many holes a canon ball wouldn’t hit the sides, expect to hear about it. If your entire story hangs on a spider silk thread of uncertainty, you’ll hear about that too. But try to have a point to the story. If it’s just a “day in the life of whoever that weird things happen to them for no particular reason and whoa look, smut”, I’ll tell you point blank- I won’t beta it. The only exception is this- If there is a reason for them to be the focus of such randomness. Randomness for the sake of randomness is not something I like.br /

One notable exception is the gaara Ice Cream Theory. It's a story that's been taken down because the author left, but the basic plotline is simple, Naruto goes insane bacause everyone denys what he is seeing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Diction, readability, detailing (both when needing to be removed and when more is needed), recognizing mary sue in all her/his/its forms, mindfcuk stories, angst, etc. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Boredom. If your story doesn't interest me It may take longer to beta or I might refuse it all together. I'm critical, sometimes overly so. I expect to feel something when I read a story, and If I don't, I might just put it down. Happy stories also can take a bit longer for me to beta. And capitalization. I tend to forget capitals or randomly capitalize things. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Any fandom is fine, but if you're looking for one where I will be asked to check for in-character-ness, then my best areas are (in no particular order) Naruto, Fruits basket, FuMoFu, Kim Possible, Wizards of Waverly Place, Ghost Rider, Harry Potter, Sonic [games, not archie comics], Supernatural and many others. It's best to just ask me if i'm familiar with the fandom. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Randomness for the sake of randomness, anything that looks like a third grader could do it better, and anything that looks like one big, long paragraph with different people talking in it. |
