Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have betaed in the past, however, that was quite sometime ago, and since then I have grown and changed. Proofreading is one of my favourite things to do when it comes to writing. I am very good and picking out awkward word choices, continuity, and other fine details that add to the piece as a whole. If you plan on having me as a beta, you need to know that I will not just search out your spelling errors or grammar mistakes, I want to help you improve your piece as a whole.
Also, if you are looking to write something different, different ideas, a new style, etc., I am the beta for you. I love when writers branch out and try something new.
And a quick word about fandoms:
At the moment I am a huge fan of House, MD (I have my first House fic underway). I have seen every season, and spend a lot of my freetime browsing the fanfiction. So at the moment, House is my preferred fandom (I have a soft spot for House/Wilson, but other pairings and nonpairings are fine.) A lot of people may know me from my work with Maximum Ride, I have since ceased writing for the fandom, as well as reading others' stories. I have only read books one and two, however I will still offer my beta services in this fandom.
Message me for specific details about other fandoms. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I like to think I somewhat excel at spelling, and have a good understanding of grammar, but I would like my services to go beyond that. Word choice, as I already mentioned, is a big one, I don't think it gets enough attention. Changing around a few choice words can make a huge difference. I also like to look at the way paragraphs flow, balance, characterization, and plot structure. The latter two I believe are my stronger points.
I am heavily influenced by minimalism and the idea of stream-of-conscious writing. As my idol Chuck Palahniuk once said, "It shouldn't be a poem of 'he said,' 'he said.'" |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am a strong believer in balance. I have little patience for long, drawling descriptions, however, I equally dislike the quick and dirty.
Sex scenes also make me rather uncomfortable, to read and write. These days everybody has hopped on one boat or the other, they either favor using the technical terms, or making a blowjob into poetry. I will read them, however, they are defintely not my strong point. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like slash, however I will still beta het.
There are certain cliches in slash that I dislike reading over and over again: they have sex constantly, people are either strangely accepting right off the bat or completely hostile, the characters become victim of a hate crime, and the "oh god he would hate me if he knew I had a crush on him" moments. I believe people can do better than that.
I prefer pairings that make sense, but whatever floats your boat.
I have a soft spot for hurt/comfort too. (: |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I dislike cliches, however, I am willing to work with anyone to try to improve their writing. |
