Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hello there, fellow author! This humble servant is here for you. I love to edit and read, and most of all, I love to edit and read fan fiction. There's something magical about sharing love for a universe with others across the WORLD WIDE WEB. So I shall continue to tell you what kind of humble servant you may be commissioning for your work!
I will never endeavour to insult or humiliate fellow authors. What I am wont to do is offer advice and suggestions to help potentially IMPROVE YOUR WRITING (echo echo echo). I may become blunt at times, but honesty is my best policy. What may sting and pinch your nerves from my comments now may lead you to the better writer we all strive to be. So keep in mind: I am always friendly, I will always love to read your work, no matter how mean I might seem to be, and I will never be harsh with the intention to insult you. I love you for writing fan fiction!
My style of editing comes with one rule: I never make the changes for you. Instead, I will highlight in either red or blue and put a note in brackets after the word/sentence of my thoughts. This way you can see what you wrote and what I have to say about it, and therefore you can learn from those notes! I also love to throw green in there, too, just to let you know what parts of your writing shine and really tickle my fancy. I'm not all doom and gloom, I promise!
If you still wish for this humble servant to beta read for you, I prefer e-mail, which you can access from my author panel above this profile! I will accept works in progress or complete one-shots/short stories/novels/epics-the sky's the limit! I am always timely, and at the latest your work will be back in your virtual hands within three days (assuming average chapter length is 3 to 6 000 words long).
P.S. I'm Canadian but I can work around you other silly English types :) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Dialogue, characters, events, proper presentation, and GRAMMAR. But who isn't strong in grammar these days, I ask you? Certainly not you or I! Spelling, unfortunately, no longer counts as a strength, because you have the Internet and spell check at your disposal. But that doesn't mean there's still oopsies to fix, and I'm the ma'am for the job! Plus I'm charming and good looking, so that's a bonus for you. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I seem to suck eggs when it comes to proper tenses. It's like trying to remember to tie your shoelaces when you're young-you just went over the steps, but you just can't remember them now! Maybe by the time I'm forty I shall remember how it's done. I'm also not the sharpest tool in the shed (hard to believe, I know) and so crime/mystery type stories will elude me, and checking for specific clues and giveaways to make your story air-tight is not my forte.
And-oh my God-commas. You think you know the little runts. Lately I've been on a comma stint; even the most basic of uses eludes me on my best days. Therefore, I tend to avoid using them. Like just there, in yonder sentence. Or in that sentence. Do those commas belong? Am I deluded? I read a novel recently and thought, "Really? A comma goes there but not there? What am I... EXISTENTIAL CRISIS!"
My weakness is that I'm not perfect; I am but a wistful, living-on-a-dream girl, who wants to be published but is sorely mistaken. One day I shall be just as brilliant as all my hero authors, but in the meantime, I will make do with what I have, and serve you to the best of my abilities. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Action, romance, drama, SUSPENSE! TRAGEDY! LOVECRAFTIAN!
I am game for whatever you've got to throw at me. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
To be honest, there isn't one cup of tea I wouldn't drink these days. Obviously I can't beta for you if your story is from a category I'm not familiar with, but if it's something easily accessible and quickly understood (say, like, a movie!) then I shall gladly gather my knowledge quickly and take on your project. I will wince a little if your events, characters, and actions are unbelievable, wacky, and outright silly, but my undying love of editing shall prevail, and I will try to improve the story's questionable antics without breaking any of your bones with words. |
