Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I would like to help intermediate writers become more confident in their skills and assist them in honing those skills. I am not afraid of criticizing a piece, but I do try and balance the bad with the good.
While I willing to accept almost anything, I do have a few basic requirements that will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis:
* Proper capitalization and punctuation, within reason.
* All stories must be written in real english, a.k.a. no text speak unless it is built into the story.
* I need to be a member of the fandom to accurately assess your work, unless you just want the basics (spelling, grammar, cohesion). So, please, ask me first.
* (It helps if you provide me with the basic type of story you are going to write, including pairings.)
Also, when requesting me as a beta I would like to see a small writing sample, either from the story I would be betaing or from a separate recent work. Styles change, as do writing levels, and sometimes the things you already have published do not accurately represent what you have to offer. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am very good at grammar, finding words that spellcheck has fixed incorrectly, and working with dialog. I am also fairly good at cohesion, descriptions, character development, and keeping characters, well, in character.
I will discuss plot and character development if needed, but that is not my primary goal as a beta. If you have a special project you are looking for help on, I am willing to consider special cases. PM me with the details. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Spelling is not my biggest strength, but I am more likely to notice a misspelled word in another person's work than in my own. I am also a procrastinator, but if I take on your story I will try and get you a copy of the revised work within seven days. This timeline can be changed if you need the work faster. Again, this will have to be worked out individually and it must be predetermined. (As in no last minute changes.) |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like stories that take a character or a group of characters, and puts them into a situation(s) that makes the character(s) develop. Psychology is very interesting to me, as is the human condition. Therefore, I am also a romance girl, so feel free to send that my way. I am not afraid of a little fluff (or a little citrus).
I also have a thing for mystery or suspense stories, but I am not very good a writing them, so I will not be able to offer much in the ways of plot.
AUs are also greatly appreciated, but everything within reason, okay? |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I dislike prominent OCs, and I often find that they are a way to move the plot forward when the author becomes stuck. Small OCs, such as a shop owner or a random classmate have never bothered me. More often than not they make a story better by adding another level of depth to it. (A Mary-Sue and the like are considered prominent OCs.)
I dislike yoai and yuri, but same sex relationships don't send me running ot the hills.
Also, while I will read stories containing sexual content, I will generally refrain from doing more than the basics in these areas. It is a personal preference, and it is also (slightly) disputable. |
