Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have always enjoyed reading other people's stories and helping them with anything they need. I enjoy having a full view of where the story is going, at least in a broad sense, so that I can give the most accurate assistance. I like to keep track of interesting details and edit plot points and physical writing. I am very intense when it comes to mechanics and I look for misspelled words, improper verb tense, run on sentences, and anything else that makes the reading awkward. I do not mind looking at individual chapters or the entire story. I work using Microsoft Word, although I can read documents in almost any format. While using Word, I leave comments in red text and do a summary of any major problems or changes at the end of the document. Any personal editing styles that an author prefers I do not mind using. I usually read through a chapter very quickly, and I usually have about two or three hours each day to work on other people's stories. I try and give the chapter back within one day, maybe two. The only day I can't work on is Sunday. I can handle working on maybe three or four stories at once, but if a story is very long and is posted infrequently, I will need the author to tell me ahead of time so I can keep track of any plot points I might need to remember. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am good with seeing the overall plot and making choices about how it will affect each piece of the story. I am very good at checking mechanics, as previously mentioned, and I can usually make a story seem a bit more professional. I know how to keep a story mostly non-offensive and how to edit content to make a point while being less crass, violent, or provocative. I notice most humor and can point out how to make a certain joke more prominent or less vague. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am very opinionated and will most likely have a great deal to say about how each story and chapter moves in terms of plot. I am not afraid to speak my mind, even if it feels rude, though I do try to be nice about it. I do not do very well in editing content if the writer is writing about something I do not have very much knowledge in. I try to look up as much as I can about the topic, but there are areas I have no knowledge of. I tend to be overly cautious in my writing and editing and tend to move away from anything that might be considered politically incorrect, making me somewhat biased against some jokes or topics that irritate people. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I love fantasy related stories and I enjoy most book and anime fictions. I really enjoy fantasy and science fiction and will even tolerate some romance genres. I like reading crossovers for the most part and do not even mind reading stories about books I have never read or animes I have never heard of. I research them to make sure I know what I am reading and I enjoy reading stories that force me to expand my horizons. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not read anything that is rated Mature and I do not like to read Teen rated stories that have borderline mature content( ie. "lemons" vs. "limes"). I do not like overly obvious plots and I get tired of seeing popular pairings and crossovers. I do not prefer crossovers with the real world and I do not like reading stories with more than two or three made up characters. Stories with the author in them as a main character do not appeal to me, though a cameo appearance can be good. |
