Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm amazingly picky. If I don't like the fandom, your style, or your overall plot, then I probably won't make it past the first paragraph. Usually, I check for spelling, grammar, wording, and sentence structure. I only pay attention to the plot half of the time, so make it semi-decent and bearable, and we'll both be okay. What I expect from the writer: 1) You have to be able to write in basic, understandable English. No omg, lolz, WeIrD tYpE, textspeak, etc., whatever. If your English teacher won't condone it, neither will I. 2) You MUST be able to accept criticism. I'm a very blunt and straightforward person, so if you're the overly sensitive type, run away NOW. 3)I like lists, so if I start listing any errors, you should be able to stick around for a while. 4) Cheesy is good, but only to a certain point. If your story is a mushy, gushy, feel-good half the time, don't expect me to stick around. 6) Screaming at me won't help either of us. If you don't like what I say, you officially have the right to fire me. But only if you tell me what I'm doing wrong first. Constructive criticism is always good.
And don't expect me to have your work completely edited within 24 hours. Give me at least 3-5 days, and if I'm really busy, a week.
And if I already think you're an awesome writer, I'll tell you to go away and find a beta with higher standards. So if I fire you immediately, consider it a compliment. (Unless I tell you otherwise.) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling, grammar, wording, and sentence structure mostly. Occasionally, finding bad, inconsistent, stale plots. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Mostly crossovers and fresh ideas I've wanted to see happen for awhile. Sometimes the "SQUUUEEEE!!!!" factor overrides my logic. So my work might not be up to par for a little while. Also, small, minor inconsistencies. My brain just kind of skips over those. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
A brand new idea, but not so overly ridiculous or farfetched as to seem completely and utterly impossible. I would love to see more mysteries, adventures, and noirs. I also like one-shots. I'm not good with long-term projects much. (But if you manage to interest me enough, I can stay committed.) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Plotless romance and overdone fluff, along with Mary Sues and OCs. Self-insertion, too, occasionally, unless it's a humor/parody fic. I can't stand it, so leave now if you're thinking about showing it to me. (Unless you think it's so GOOD that I can't refuse. I dare you to try and change the unchangeable.) |
