Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am able to beta anything, regardless of rating or show. Of course, you must be aware that I can't comment on your characterization if I haven't watched the show/read the book before.
My style is as follows. I will edit for spelling/grammar/structure and, if relevant, plot holes, marking any alterations with an asterix (*). At the end of each edited paragraph I will include a '(NOTE...)' detailing the change I have made, and why I have made it. This makes it clearer for you to go back and decide whether you agree or not and, if you don't, it's obvious where the change is, so you can change it back again.
Once you've sent me your work, I'll get back in touch and agree a time for it to be returned. Obviously, this depends on my schedule, but I usually only take a couple of days. I'll make sue I keep you up-to-date on my progress so you're not left in the dark. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I can edit grammar, spelling and (for certain things) characterization. I can notice almost every error in your work, but hardly any of them in my own (annoying, yes) which is why I also involve beta readers in my own projects.
I speak Spanish and a little French on top of my English, but I have sources across the world who will be able to assist with many languages I don't speak.
I'll go above and out to help you improve, but it's a two-way street. If what I'm telling you is ignored or avoided, I won't tell you again and you'll continue to make the same mistakes. That said, if you don't understand and realize why, I will spend any amount of time helping you out. Always.
I'm a psychology student, so I know all about the wonders of behavioral interpretations. I know it's all subjective, but, at the end if the day, if I think someone is really out of character (or if an OC really wouldn't react in a certain way) I can help you get around it. Also, I did used to study medicine, so any biological/chemical/medical questions can come my way, if you so wish.
Research is really important to me. If I read something in your fic that interests me, I'll research it. And if it's wrong you'll get a very annoyed PM from me. Why make things up? Google is your friend. Of course, if you're struggling to find things out, I'll assist wherever I can. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I get giggly when reading/writing M, but I enjoy doing it.
I can be very critical. If your writing is not up to scratch, or your characters not in character, I'll tell you. If you take constructive criticism personally, move along. I'm looking to help people who want to improve, not deal with emotional writers. I'll be your editor when I have my red pen in hand, and I'll be your friend outside of that. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I can help with characterization with
CSI: Miami, LV and NY;
Bones,
Without a Trace;
Law and Order SVU;
The x Files;
Friends.
There are a few others, so PM me and ask if I watch. If I don't watch your show, and you still want my help, I have no problem with that. I just recommend you get someone to read it after I've edited it to check for characterization. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Incest, unless it's really prevalent to the story (i.e, with Special Victims Unit stories). If it's a random one-shot about a character getting it on with his sister, I'd rather not.
Abuse: I don't mind editing these at all, but I really need to know about it before I start reading. So when you PM me, let me know it contains the subject of abuse. That way, I'm prepared. |
