Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I honestly do not label myself as a "beta reader," but rather someone who generally enjoys helping others within their time of need. It just so happens, however, that helping others with improving their stories and writing overall, as well as give helpful suggestions is precisely what defines a beta reader.
I do not pretend to be a fantastic pro at what I do; however, I do listen to what people say when asking for my assistance. I respect every and all thoughts and personal suggestions that they, themselves, might have for their story, and merely do what it is I was asked to do. That is, read over a person's work, check for spelling and grammatical errors, story format, and insert helpful suggestions that he/she is welcome to acknowledge or decline.
As for experience, I have been doing it for eleven years without having realized it, since I was fourteen-years-old, so I believe that I am pretty confident in what needs to be done. And in terms of this website, I have created a Beta Reader forum that has been up for two years now (which the link can be found in my member profile straightaway), because I recognized that other fellow members were looking for people and a place on here where they could go to find the assistance they needed. And it has been pretty successful ever since.
So to anyone who would wish to ask me for beta reading services, I would surmise that they could expect satisfying results (even if it is for a series I am not entirely familiar with, as well, because I will still read and check over any mistakes made and give suggestions on how to improve certain passages), because I love to read and write, am completely enamored by words and appreciate the hard work, dedication and many hours that goes into making a good story even better.
Being that the site has now added the new "DocX" feature, here are the three ways to contact me for assistance:
1) Please first PM me, of course, to let me know you wish to employ my beta reading services.
2) IF (and ONLY if) you have already posted a few chapters to whichever story you wish for me to help you beta read, yet would like me to give you an opinion upon it regardless, then that is (the only time, as I am already not fond of this feature, finding it fruitless and futile for anything else BUT beta reading) I will be using the "DocX" feature. I will copy and then paste what you had posted already, and treat it as I would any other story I am beta reading, before then sending it back to you with said feature.
3) For chapters you have YET to post and need assistance with, then send your story chapter(s) to the following e-mail: fanfictionbetareader@gmail.com. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As a beta reader, my most profound strengths would be the attention to detail I put into every story I look over. Proper spelling, punctuation, etc, as well as story format and what could make the story flow on the whole grammatically. I basically treat what I'm looking over as though it were my own story, and put in the same amount of work and effort into finding ways to make it better as I always do with what I write for myself. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
The only "weakness" that I might have is that I sometimes tend to bite off more than I can chew. That is, I always strive to assist as many people as I can and sometimes all at once, since a lot of people do seek me out personally. And being that I never wish to let anyone down, I tend to get behind in getting back to people as promptly as they might wish (especially if it's "busy season" for me).
However, this does not happen all the time, of course, and once I start looking over someone's work I finish it within the same time frame. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Although I usually still try to help everyone in general, I do honestly prefer to deal with stories or series I have not only heard of but have watched or read, making me relatively to well versed in it and thus increasing the standard of assistance.
So, therefore, stories based upon series like, to name a few, W.I.T.C.H., Winx Club, Harry Potter, Tin Man, or Sailormoon would be quite fine for me to assist with. But again, though, even if it is not something I'm super familiar with I will still give it my best in terms of spelling/grammatical errors and helpful suggestions. |

As clearly indicated thus far, I'm not truly biased against what I beta read; however, the only time I would ever truly turn down a story that I could not beta read is, again, if I have never personally heard of nor watched/read the series its based upon. |
