Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader As a beta-reader, I focus primarily on three things, the first and obvious being grammar and spelling. The second being being less obvious but just as important, is characterization. Does the character actually behave that way? Would they say something like that, or speak in that manner? This is just as central to the story as a well developed plot. And last but not least, is accuracy. Are certain events possible within the storyline? These are the three things I focus on when I read a story. So naturally, anyone I choose to lend my services to, should value these things in a story as well. Those who don't are, quite frankly, not worth my time reviewing, let alone beta-ing. | My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths When it comes to a story, I tend to treat it as if I were the one writing it. Therefor I tend to read through the story with a fine tooth comb, searching for any mistakes or inconsistencies that I can find. I believe that having a lack of these things can make a story that much better to read. I am also not above issuing compliments on parts of a story that are well written, and on characterization that is done well. I'm even willing to give ideas of my own to the writer if they find themselves stuck. | My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses As I said above, I tend to treat a story as if I had written it whenever I read chapter. That being the case, I can be brutally honest at times, though I have learned through personal experience that this is sometimes the best way for a writer to grow. I can also become annoyed if I feel that my suggestions are not being taken into consideration. So if you're looking for a beta-reader who will coddle your ego, and can't take constructive criticism, then you should probably look elsewhere. | Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others I don't really have any preferences when it comes to a story, only that the plot be original and entertaining. As long as it's entertaining, then I'll gladly read it. | Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for There are only two types of stories that I don't really bother with, yaoi stories between characters that cannon-wise are NOT gay, and suicide stories. I find the former to be utterly ridiculous because it is highly unlikely and is an example of poor characterization, while the latter I find to be wholly depressing. Nine times out of ten, the readers are reading to be entertained. And nothing is entertaining about suicide. |
