Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hey all, so, I guess I'm volunteering to be a beta... Anyway, I love to edit and read with a critical eye. So I'd love to have a look at any stories you have that might need some editing. Please drop me an email if you'd like me to beta for you.
I'm mostly interesting in beta-ing for people who are passionate about writing, which I hope is most people on this site. I'm totally game for any length of work, from drabble to 50-chapter titan, though I'd like a heads up if your story is going to be huge. I'd also like it if you posted regular updates, they don't have to be really often, but I don't want to be waiting on your story for months. Of course, I understand if you want to quit (real life wins in the end sometimes), just please let me know if your not going to update for a long time.
Anyway, I ask you be relatively thick skinned as well, as I tend to be a harsh critique. No, I'm not mean, but I'm not going to sugar coat anything or tell you something is good when it isn't.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm pretty good at all general editing. I have a very good ear for sentances that don't make sense, all also believable dialog. I can easily tell you if something sounds awkward, or if it doesn't sound like a real conversation. I also usually have a pretty good idea of how to fix something like that.
I lovelovelove working on fighting scenes. I've been doing martial arts for 7 years now and I'm very good at putting together a fight or letting you know if yours makes no sense. If your fic has a lot of physical conflict I think I'd be a very good beta for you.
I'm generally good with plots as a whole, as well. As a character-driven writer, I'd like to think I'm good with characters too. WARNING: I WILL tell you if your characters are being unbelievable or cliche. So don't get offended. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As I already said, I tend to be a harsh editor, so please don't feel like I'm picking on you.
I'll also admit, spelling is not my forte. I pretty much rely of spell-check for everything. I'm also not a grammar nut either. While you don't want to sound like a lolcat, I think starting the occasional sentence with 'and' isn't going to hurt anyone.
I also can't guarantee I'll pick up all the little discrepancies in your plot, especially if it happened a while back. I really don't have a great memory for the little details.
I also don't do sex. I'll read the occasional romance, but I'm really not a good editor for that seeing as I have NO romantic experience. I'm great with human relationships, but I'm extremely uneducated in scenes of that kind. I'll edit your fic, but I probably can't help you much with your 'intimate' scenes. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'm up for almost anything. However, I'm pretty much limited to stuff I've listed in my profile as one of my fandoms.
I'll tackle almost any pairing, yaoi included, though its never been my thing. I love all sorts of genres, as long as they are well written. Ideally, I love balance in the plot; a little bit or action, some romance, horror, mystery, humor, angst... whatever it is you have sitting in the back of the metaphorical fridge that is your brain. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
As I've said, I'm game for almost anything, but I do have a few things I'm not terribly fond of.
I don't like really graphic sex scenes. It just makes me uncomfortable. Mpreg kinda weirds me out as well. If romance is the entire plot of your story, I'm probably not the beta for you.
I also can't say I'm fond of the really 'emo' stuff. Sorry if that term offends you, I don't know how to describe it another way. If more than one character in your fic cuts themselves, don't ask me to be your beta. Don't get me wrong, I love dark writing, just not over the top dark writing.
That's pretty much it for what I don't like, I guess. |
