Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a retired school teacher and enjoy reading and writing Harry Potter fan fiction. I currently have two WIP stories and several completed stories posted on this site. I do not work and am disabled so the turn around time for beta reading is fairly quick. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am very good at most spelling errors and fixing confusing and incomplete sentences. I have taught remedial English at the High School level as well as general English in Middle School grade levels. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I do have cataracts so sometimes I miss small errors simply because I don't see them. Also, my use of punctuation is older and more formal so younger readers sometimes complain that I use too many commas. When I first started writing, I did use too many italics and other superfluous punctuation but I hope I have outgrown that phase. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like straight forward Harry Potter stories. I like super/Harry, AU, independent/Harry, and even manipulative/Dumbledore. I also like time travel, particularly ones where Harry travels back to his younger self and corrects some of his mistakes. I like well written Harry pairings with Ginny, Hermione, Tonks, and most others if they can be supported. I also like well written Snape mentor/severitis stories if they are well developed. I prefer novel length though I do sometimes enjoy a well developed one-shot. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do not care for most Slash stories or even straight stories if they are too graphic. I am an adult with four children and six grandchildren but Harry Potter is written for young adults. I do not like any adult in a sexual relationship with a minor of either gender. I also don't care for most of the cross-over stories though there are notable exceptions, especially if well written. I don't like stories where Snape is professing his love for his son, Harry, by the second chapter. I also don't like stories where the characters are static and unchanging (a fault of Ms. Rowlings on peripheral characters). |
