Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well, let's see...
I've beta'd for people before, so I have some experience with beta-reading. I am working on a creative writing major in college, so I am officially at least semi-intelligent (I hope). My style when I beta-read isn't as...intense, as the styles of other people around here; I'll definitely give my opinions on the fic, and I'm no stranger to getting pretty harsh, but in the end it's not gonna break my heart if you choose not to follow my advice.
Obviously not everyone is destined to be an award-winning writer, but if I'm gonna beta-read for you, I'd like there to be at least a hint of effort in the fic. Also, if I beta-read something, I WILL critique it (obviously)...so no having meltdowns when I point out what I didn't like. Like I said, I don't care whether you take the advice or not, but I don't have time to deal with some irate would-be writer spamming my mailbox with 'omg dis fic is perphect ur just jelus!111!' garbage. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I like to think I know how to give advice/comments without coming across as a total asshole. The fandoms I'm willing to beta for, I'm extremely into (read: unhealthily obsessed), so I'll have a good grip on the characters, and whether they're acting like themselves in your fics. I have a decent grip on spelling and grammar as well, which is always rather important in a beta-reader.
I'm ok with reading stories involving sex/violence/'adult themes'/cursing/etc., so you don't have to worry about 'offending me', either. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm in college-I have next to no free time. Once you ask me to beta something, I will do my best to beta-read it ASAP...but there will probably be times when I simply won't have the time for a week or so.
Also, I'm not gonna lie, I'm anal about the parings I read. (See the 'not my cup of tea' category.) I know that makes me pretty limited, but...I figure if the reader doesn't like your paring, they're gonna have a harder time being objective, and I don't wanna screw anyone over. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Any genre (fantasy, mystery, horror, action, utter romantic fluff...anything) is fine by me. I would GREATLY prefer to beta for stories where I actually like/support the parings within. This works for yaoi as well...as long as it's not a paring I can't stand, I have no problem with homosexual parings. Fics without any romance or parings are fine as well.
(By the way...in case you don't already know, I'm an insane Royai (from Fullmetal Alchemist) fan. If it's Roy and Riza, I'll beta-read it.) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I would prefer to not beta for fics with parings I don't support/know about...as mentioned, I really wouldn't be able to be fair. So...if it's in my profile as a paring I won't like (like Roy/Ed, for instance) you'll probably want to find someone else.
I'm a canon-whore: no 'let's turn this character gay/straight/female/male when he/she isn't really!' fics, please (I'll make exceptions, but on a case-by-case basis). I'm not too big on AU fics, either...I will read those, but I admit they're not my favorite type of story to look at. The only exception to that is highschool fics-I won't read those, no matter how well they're written. Sorry, not my thing.
No poems or songfics either, please...I think I've seen two good examples of those in all the years I've been here, so I'd prefer to just avoid them altogether when it comes to beta-reading.
Er. And no incest fics, please. |
