Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
One of the main themes you'll see running through my beta profile is the idea of "canon above all else." I guess this reflects my views and philosophy concerning fan fiction in general, where the original canon, be it from a game, a novel, a play, or an anime exists as a jumping-off point for the imagination. However great the original canon may be, it always leaves gaps; no one ever tells the ENTIRE story, because one would spend all of eternity telling it. So that's where I feel fan fiction exists, in those gaps in the original canon, which may happen either before, during, or after the given storyline. I feel very strongly that whatever is dreamt up to fill in these gaps must not conflict with the canon, because otherwise I don't see the point in writing a story FOR another story.
I write fan fiction out of respect and admiration for the story which inspired my imagination and coaxed me to tell a story of my own, and as such, I feel that maintaining the integrity of the original storyline is paramount.
This is not to say that stories and plotlines outside of strict canon won't be considered, but there has to be a significant and well-thought out reason for deviating from canon.
In addition, I expect the stories that I beta-read to be already reviewed by the author and spell-checked and grammar-checked. I prefer to help out more with story, character, and plot concepts, as well as continuity issues, rather than the act of putting the pen to the paper. I'd rather work on your ideas as opposed to your writing. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Okay, so in my real-life job, I work as a Quality coordinator for digital images. As a result, have a lot of experience with quality assurance and implementation of both academic and in-house standards, and although the standards for imaging, and the standards for writing are quite different, the application of those standards are really where I excel. Short version: I'm a bit of a nit-pick.
I will read your story carefully and offer helpful bits of constructive criticism. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As far as weaknesses go, I'm usually really strapped for time these days, so if you need something proofread yesterday, I can tell you it probably won't happen. After all, what's the rush? |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
The fics that I usually enjoy the most (although this is by no means a hard and fast rule) take place usually within canon, and sometimes during the canon story itself. The stories I like best have a good grasp of canon character and tone. I feel if those two elements remain congruent to the original, then you can do more or less whatever else you can think of, and it will still be good. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Alternate Universe fics are usually boring to me, and out-of-character stories usually just manage to annoy me. If you're going to have a character from a game act out-of-character, why not just generate an original character? Same thing for AU fics: if you're going to write a story set in a place/time different from canon, why write fanfic at all? Why not just write an original story? Sorry if I'm rambling.
Also, I have no problem with homosexual themes in fanfics, but it MUST BE supported evidence in the canon! Same thing goes for any cutting/suicide, or any other mature themes. In short, if the fic is not faithful to the canon, it stand a high chance of me disregarding it.
Self-insertion fics generally stand zero chance of my reading them. Just a heads-up. |
