Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My friends are always teasing me about my urge to correct or point out mistakes in writing I see all the time, because it's just second nature to me, whereas they would never notice it. Despite their teasing, I'm always the first choice when it comes to essay editing. My mission in life is to rid the world of poor spelling and grammar! Not really, but that's what I do. I also help with plot ideas when they're working on something creative. One of my stories actually inspired a friend's class project. I just have two requests if you'd like me to read your stuff: 1) Let me know if you're not going to post for a while for whatever reason, and I'll let you know if I won't be available. Just so I'm not sitting around waiting for a chapter that won't be coming for a while, and 2) If there's something you drew your inspiration for a certain part from that you don't mind sharing with me, please share it, so I can sorta see where you're coming from. I currently have dial-up internet, but have access to high speed internet. I'm in the Eastern time zone, and work days (as in, I get home somewhere between 3 and 7 in the afternoon, and might be on in the morning before leaving), but can work on editing before work, just can't up/download anything at those times. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As I mentioned, spelling and grammar are big strengths of mine. If I'm not sure about something, I'll search for how it should be. I'm getting better at symbolism, foreshadowing and the like too, so I can help in those areas if you're looking to make your story a bit deeper. When it comes to actual writing, I excel in tragic romances and emotional anguish. They just come naturally to me. I tend to be good at writing about emotions, so I can really help you with that aspect. I can write other stuff too, but that is my forte. I can also help with plot ideas, or just be someone for you to talk to about plot. I'm good at coming up with ideas or at least giving a direction for you to go in to look for more ideas. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can falter a bit at keeping characters in character. Sometimes I find characters speaking a bit more intellectually than they should be, or acting more idiotic than they should. Mainly more intellectually though. I can also stumble a bit when it comes to the finer points of grammar, like certain punctuation (semicolons!), although I am getting better at knowing when to use what. I'm a procrastinater, and can get a bit busy in my personal life, but working on deadlines always gets me moving quicker and I try to work on stuff during my breaks and free time. If anything is going to stop me from editing for a while, I will let you know. I'm not very good at writing fights, or comedies. Bits of humor are all right, just not flat out comedies. Fights just have a lot going on. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Dark stories are my favourites, because I'm best at them, but I'll edit pretty much any type of story. I do like knowing what's going on though, so it should be based on something I'm familiar with. If you don't see me registered in the area your story's based in, just check with me, because it could be that I'm working through it and don't want any spoilers, or I just didn't register there. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Yaoi/Yuri I will NOT do. I'm not against it, I just don't really like reading it. I won't do anything rated M either, because I'll probably do some of my work at school and around my parents, so I don't want to be trying to hide it from them. Swearing's alright, just nothing too severe (as in every other word all the time) for the same reason. Fights and comedies I put in my weaknesses. I'd prefer not to edit anything based on something I've never heard of either, but you might be able to talk me into it. |
