Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Let's see.... I suppose I should start with my qualifactions? (Can you have qualifications to beta?! Hmmm, experience... that would be a better word!)
So, I'm betaing three, authors work (two on CSI:NY, and one on CSI:Miami), um, I wrote a dissertaion and spent many an hour editing my housemates (although that was somewhat more formal) and I guess the other experience I have is that I've been editing my union website (and the fresher's welcome handbook) all last summer.
I'm open for betaing pretty much anything, even if I haven't watched the show - I'll let you know if I have no knowledge about it though (you really wouldn't want me suggesting anything if I know nothing about it) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
CSI NY in particular is probably the best fiction I can beta for as it's the show I can tell you the most about (Yes, I am anal enough to be collecting the badge numbers of the cast), and possibly Supernatural.
I can write in UK English and US English, I can manage French (I'm not fluent) and handfuls of German and Spanish. Basically, with French, German and Spanish, it's a couple of lines in an otherwise English fic - nothing more - I'm not that good! lol |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
If I read something and it doesn't 'feel' right, I will tell you - that doesn't bother me (and I can usually be tactful about it too), the problem comes in that sometimes I can tell it doesn't feel right, but I may not be able to tell you WHY it doesn't!)
My other problem comes from the fact that I work two jobs. Now, when I took the jobs, I was supposed to be working about twenty hours at each. Somehow it's balanced more to be 40 hours at one, and sometimes pushing 30 at the other. Combined with a part time class, I can't get fics back by the next day. Usually a day or two, but sometimes it will take longer - I will let you know if the work load is on the up, though!
Smut - I will read it, no problem, I will check the spellings... but I'm the type who would rather leave it up to the imagination, given the choice! |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
OC fics are my favourite - I have a thing about Mary Sue's, and I know how hard it can be to stop an OC becoming one (hey, I struggle with that too) and a good beta will keep you grounded.
Most ships will float (excuse the pun) but I will struggle with Smacked - it's just... wrong. That being said, I wouldn't turn you down if you sent me a Smacked fic! |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Not really - probably just stuff I haven't watched (although these days, it's pretty much limited to kids shows - ask me about Hannah Montana (is that really her name) and I wouldn't have a clue!)
And song fics. I have a habit of avoiding them if they use too many lyrics in them. I think a writer should be able to write without having to rely on half their word count being taken up on lyrics.
Oh, and seriously, me and poetry go together as well as toasters and showers!
I don't mind slash, but I won't beta Wincest. Nuh uh! |
