Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm not what you'd call an expert at giving critique on all elements of a story; more like a revisionist for minor, last-minute changes.
If you ask me to look over something for you, be sure to have someone else with a higher level of overall expertise see it afterward. I'm not here to help make your stories perfect, nor does my input have the final say in anything.
I'm here as more of a guide, a 'peer-reviewer' if you will. Little more than an armchair critic, and a single voice among many.
Also, make note of the fact that I am harsh and unforgiving; when I see something in blatant need of revision and/or fixing, I will inform you in no uncertain terms of your mistake, and I shall rarely show any manners or euphemisms to make my point clear.
If you can't take any of that, then you'll need to find another beta reader.
Of course, I'm not one to rant about a single spelling error, or otherwise resort to any other such extremism; but if, for example, your OC is an obvious Mary-Sue, or the canon characters as you have written them into your story are just plain out-of-character, then you can be sure to expect no mercy from me. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
When it comes to writing, my greatest strengths are easily storytelling, plot twists, and other important literary devices related to the plot; for me, a good work of fiction not only has to be well-written, but thrilling as well. Make use of cliffhangers, experiment with different story ideas and concepts; leave the reader asking questions, and not just the what, but the who, the how, and the why as well. Tell a tale.
Also, I'll admit that keeping canon characters in-character is another one of my strengths, and I am, at the very least, better than most when it comes to characterization, although I could be a little better.
Lastly, setting my spelling and grammar skills aside, I'm very big on character development, easily to a fault.
Note that even these strengths of mine cannot even begin to make up for my many weaknesses, though. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Transitions. They are my worst nightmare, and month after month of practicing to improve on my ability to implement them has done little. Nearly all of my stories are fragmented, paragraph-by-paragraph, and give the impression of being "sub-chapters" of their own within a single given chapter.
In addition, my skills with moderately minute detail could hardly be called subpar.
My use of description often gets repetitive over the course of most of my chapters, and my dynamic plot twists and word usage frequently leaves many of my readers downright confused.
In short, I have a very long way to go. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Something with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I'm not your English teacher.
Also, I highly prefer One-Shots, hopefully ones that aren't monstrously long. Science fiction and poetry also work well for me. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Don't give me a beast of a story to look over. Anything ridiculously long or with more than twelve to fourteen chapters gives me an e-migrane.
Also, don't send me any romance stories. I hate romance fics, and I suck at looking them over anyway.
If you send me a "truth or dare", "high school", "lemon", "random humor", "interview", "singing contest", "garage band", "crossover", or "vacation" fic, or anything in script, block format, or with lyrics, you will be promptly denied without question.
After all, if you actively write anything that could potentially fit into any of the above categories, then you're most likely untalented beyond help. |
