Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I generally prefer to do a full read-through and search out errors. Misused words, grammatical errors, spelling errors, fragments that don't make sense--that sort of thing (fragments that do make sense, like the fragment I just wrote, I usually leave alone). I absolutely do not trust grammar check programs as anything other than a loose guideline, something to sniff out where grammar errors might or might not lurk.
I'm also perfectly happy to discuss the work with the author and see if I can find ways to make scenes, lines of dialogue, or other parts of the story work better. However, I don't usually go in and remove or greatly alter scenes or lines without an author's permission. The artistic vision of any work is the author's. So if you want me to edit your story's creative content as well as its technical side, you'll have to let me know in advance.
If you submit a work to me, it will be as grammatically correct as anything written in English is. We all have our own ideas of grammar and our own ways of punctuating things, and I'm not really the type to cramp someone else's style unless it really is WRONG. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I excel in the technical details. "Semicolon versus comma" is a nasty little question I personally enjoy chewing on. And I've always been good at spelling. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not the best of canon editors, as I don't particularly CARE about canon. It's just a starting point to me. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Generally speaking, I prefer to edit pieces in my own fandoms. I prefer gen to everything else, though I will also edit het, femslash, and non-graphic slash. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
For Final Fantasy VII fandom, absolutely no Vincent/Tifa. It's a pairing I truly detest for reasons I couldn't explain.
I don't like to read graphic slash except for pairings so very specific that they might as well not exist. Because of that, I pretty much WON'T edit graphic slash.
Also, if the story is entirely crack-based to the point of being a bunch of incoherent rambling, the answer is NO. I'll refuse you out of hand. |
