Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My style? Hm. I suppose my approach would be getting the chapter or whole story and reading through it for grammar/spelling etc and anything in parituclar you requested I keep an eye on. I would provide my thoughts on certain points, observations about a character or conversation maybe, something that didn't seem to fit or flow, or something I didn't understand. I would make the corrections of technical problems and explain why and be happy to discuss any element of the story, plot, characters etc that you're having a problem with. Or I'm happy to discuss writing in general.
I would strongly prefer corresponding through e-mail rather than this site because I find it easier, and even using MS Word documents and the Track Changes features which makes changes easy to see, accept/reject and so forth. Though I haven't explored this site's system but I think Word will likely come out on top.
And finally, if you want me to beta I of course expect that you'll be willing to accept constructive criticism and actually work on the fic in a timely manner. I understand things coming up of course, they do for me, too. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, continuity, people in character. I have a good ear/eye for dialogue, if it sounds realistic and believable. This extends to prose as well, sometimes people get flowery in despcirptions etc and it stops sounding natural. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My biggest weakness is probably that I don't necessarily have the technical stuff - I can't tell you this sentence is a hanging participle and it's bad because... or this is wrong because there isn't subject/verb agreement. I just know when I read something that it's wrong and how to fix it, I don't necessarily have the proper language to explain although I can usually explain adequately.
My other weakness is I don't have the patience for something that starts off *really* bad, or the patience to deal with someone who refuses to listen/learn. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer stories with clear, event driven plots that have an element of action. Character focused stories are good too, so long as there is substance, a point to everything. I do enjoy emotional turmoil, angst, the h/c aspect. Stories that mix all these elements as well as other things - humour, romance, drama etc - I find are the best.
I do not have any requirement for a "happy ending." I like stories that have strong female characters. I will read pretty much any relationship, including slash. I'll read AU, episode tags, one shots, and do chapter by chapter stuff of WIPs. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
NC-17, PWP, things with explicit sex and the like. Also, stories categorized as "fluff" that have no event driven plot or substance. A story that has humour as the main focus/element really isn't my thing. Stories with an exclusive focus on romance aren't my favourite either. I'm not fond of stories that take the characters entirely out of canon, for example all of them at high school or something equally ridiculous.
I won't read anything that debases women, marginalizes them, turns them into doormats for men - which isn't to say I won't read stories that beat them up etc, so long as they react intelligently, are strong, and have their own agency.
I won't read crossovers with something I know nothing about. |
