Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've written fic for years, and I've been a beta almost as long. Rather than go on and on, I'll just invite you to read a couple of paragraphs I've written in any one of my fics (though generally speaking, the newer the better) to see if my writing style is one that complements your own.
I'd ask that before you ask me to beta, that you decide exactly what it is you're looking for; too many problems can be caused when an author doesn't specify exactly what he wants/needs. If you want a simple grammar check (since the one on Word is pretty much rubbish), then say so. If you only want me to see if your plot makes sense, or if characters' dialogue matches canon, feel free to let me know. I don't expect an author to make every change I suggest (grammatical fixes, excepted), but I do expect an author to be open to criticism and be willing to make alterations when the need is blatantly obvious. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I feel comfortable reviewing any of the things people commonly want a beta to address -- grammar/usage, character, dialogue, plot.
And when it comes to giving comments and criticisms, I have absolutely no qualms about telling a writer exactly what I think. If you're looking for someone to rubber-stamp a fic, then don't ask me to beta for you. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Story turnaround will come more slowly from me, due to the facts that I look over stories/chapters very carefully (and sometimes multiple times) and I have a fairly busy RL that takes up lots of my time. If you're looking for a really quick beta, then seriously... don't ask me. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer stories that the writer has taken seriously. Don't ask me to beta 600-word chapters that haven't been spell-checked.
I'll beta short stories and long, but only one long story at a time; so if I have someone ask me to beta a long fic, I'll quickly end up on hiatus for any new requests. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not into slash (which often seem to be completely OOC or wildly non-canon) and most self-insertion fics (which usually end up as Mary Sues). |
