Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am particularly picky about what I read. I hate stories with too much grammar mistakes and spelling errors to the point where it's hard to understand that it doesn't matter if the story has a good plot or not. Though I am not saying that my own writing is perfect I can easily correct other people's work. When I browse through fanfictions here I usually check the right capitalization, grammar and spelling. And I can be ruthless with it, if I find see a careless summary of a story I don't give it a chance because a good summary CAN catch a reader's attention. Which is why if your story is wonderful then make a wonderful summary to go with it...consistency and all that.
For my beta-style, I am mostly concerned about grammar and spelling, as I have pointed out above. If your writing lacks the proper spacing and is bunched up together too much I will correct it. And if the characters are OOC then I will also change that, more likely I will discuss it with the author but I will make sure it is in character before it is posted or I would refuse to beta it. I may also add a bit here and there to make your story flow better. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths are in the grammar and spelling category, keeping characters IC and a good supporter, especially if I like your story or writing style. I'm good at humor, angst, romance, hurt/comfort genres. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Multi-chaptered fics. Well, as long as I'm just being a beta to it, it might not be much of a problem. Since my ideas tend to change from day to day, helping an author with a multi-chaptered fic might not be the best thing I could do. I might forget something here and there and I MIGHT get bored with the story. I might focus more on keeping the characters IC, and checking the grammar and spelling to really bother with moving of the plot. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would prefer one-shots, drabbles and anything that isn't a continuous multi-chapter fic, though I'm not restricting myself from that. I would rather beta fics in the humor, angst, romance, hurt/comfort genres since that is my forte, sci-fi and poetry really aren't so you can forget me in that regard. I would prefer to beta pairing that I do like but then not everyone likes my pairings so what the heck...usually my preferred pairings are in my profile. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not beta stories with OC characters as the main characters, I will not beta those stories which have Mary-Sue and Gary Stu that the author thinks the readers should like. I will not beta self-insertions anymore, it's just wrong. I will not beta a story only to be made a spell checker, they have programs for that. I reserve the right to withdraw my services if I get bored or I plain just don't like the story anymore.
Also I will not beta stories that does too much pairing or character bashing, it's mean and it's rude. |
