Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I aim to improve... anything and everything, generally. I'd like people that have a more open mind as far as writing and willingness to change/edit in their particular pieces of work. I'd appreciate if, beforehand, authors who wish to ask for my help via betareading would take a quick peek at my style. It's important because that's how I write, and that's probably how I'll edit, too. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I excel in grammar and catching spelling mistakes. I'm very nit-picky and tend to read over things dozens of times, editing wording and punctuation and verb tense, etc. etc. until everything flows smoothly and is polished. I'd like to think that dialogue and characterization are my strong points, so I'd probably pay a lot of attention to that. Realism is important to me, also, and I have a strong background in most things emotional and psychological that works very well with drama (or so I'm told). So, if you're looking for expertise in those areas, I'm your beta-reader. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to be somewhat... opinionated? I like to talk about the story I'm reading a little too much/discuss it to death. I'm very harsh, many people have pointed out to me, when I edit things. I'm like one of those grumpy old English professors who likes to attack papers with a bright red pen. Over-analysis is my biggest downfall, I'd say. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Let's see... drama is a very strong point of mine, but I also lean toward comedies. I like stories with longer chapters, but with a style that's easy to read. Also, keep in mind I usually lean toward yaoi/yuri, but if it's well-written I might just beta-read a het fanfic (as long as it's a pairing I like). I'd like to see effort put into the fanfiction, and for the writer of their work to treat it as a serious matter. I'm more for the mature side of things, truly. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Excessive angst, anything over-ridden with chatspeak or that is generally cliche. I probably won't take the time to look at stories that haven't been proofread by the author first-simple typos are okay, but many glaring errors are not. |
