Events of this short story take place after Holden's disappearance from Pencey Prep. A confused Ackley visits the big city in search of Holden, but runs into a few troubles of his own.

Four years after Catcher in the Rye, Phoebe's parents divorce and she runs away to live with her brother in a neighboring city. Phoebe recounts in her unique narrative voice, similar yet distinct from her brother, her struggle to continue moving forward in a world that misinterprets and misguides her at every turn.

Jane comes for a visit when Holden falls sick and they muse his future and were he plans to go from here. He still struggles to realize what being an adult really means and Jane tries to help talk him through it.

Holden decides to reply to Phoebe's 5 page letter inviting him to her play, but things go differently than what he expected.

I wasn't entirely sure where I was going to go with the ending, I tried to focus on supplying substantial background info. What I think went inside Mark David Chapman's mind when he shot John Lennon because of The Catcher in the Rye . I don't know him personally, so this is based on what I learned about him in his Wikipedia article. It's about what I think motivated the guy.

I wrote this as an English assignment. The guidelines were to write a twenty-seventh chapter to Catcher in the Rye of how Holden ended up in the mental hospital and had to be written in the style of J.D. Salinger. This takes off right after Holden's day in the park with Phoebe.
