This belongs in Mortal Engines, as a phrase in the prequel 'A web of Air' struck me particularly hard - the notion of brief and hurtful romances being 'fevers of the heart'... This wasn't exactly brief, but it was hurtful, so I wrote this.

After Mortal Engines; and Tom and Hester fly away in the Jenny Hanniver. Hester is not the girl that Tom might have lusted after; Tom is not the hero that Hester might have dreamt of in her youth. But they can see beyond, into the reality of the day.
