The movie never clarifies, but I don't think the curse came with a full explanation of cause and effect. Imagine the horror of those first transformations, then, the physical agony compounded by the disorientation of not knowing what is going on...

The bishop died as he had lived, a black magician, and he has made a new contract with the devil. After being stabbed by Navarre he casts yet another spell with his last breath, a spell more depraved than his first.

Life didn't automatically become perfect after the curse was broken, but they were finally together again.
