 Fire-breathing-ferret 2003-06-26 . chapter 6 Aw bless. Great fic! |
selkie 2002-12-27 . chapter 6 in dusha's defense, i'd like to remind the last reviewer that it was specifically stated to be an AU fic. that means that creative license can and will be taken. i enjoyed the story immensely, and i thought it was interesting, not unrealistic, how earth's precarious climb to rise above racism and discrimination could have been derailed. it only serves to show how it is easier to hate than love, but the extra effort is worth it in the long run. you're a very gifted writer. |
2002-12-26 . chapter 6 Interesting idea, but do you really think that Earth could have ever joined the united federation of planets if a part of the human race were treated like some "second-class" people or slaves? And why has the crew problems to speak to Harry, or is not sure if he understands? They have a thing called "Universel translator", which is the reason why they could communicate without any problems with Neelix, Kes and other aliens. There is no reason why it couldn't translate between different earth languages.
But without this, it's an interesting and well written story. |
Lunatique 2002-12-26 . chapter 6 What an astounding story! The writing is so good, the psychological descriptions to vivid that I could slip right into the characters' skin. I especially love the way you described Harry--the way others saw him, the small foreshadowings of intelligence and emotion that no one thought could be there, and finally getting his side of the story...it was wonderful. The other characters were also brilliantly drawn, and I could sympathize with and understand their way of thought even though as a reader I knew their perception was incorrect.
Every scene rang true and worked well, particularly the scene where Harry is being tortured. It almost had me in tears, to think that a man who had never been treated as human could show himself to be so strong and principled. The whole story is well-plotted and well-narrated, and I cannot praise it enough. Seldom have I read an AU story with such important and meaningful implications to explore.
The villains were also effective, their superstitious way of thought blending well with their cruelty, at the same time making one think about whether Starfleet was all that better, as one chose torture while the other chose centuries-long dehumanization. At least there is hope for change, which is good.
It's a sad truth that people often cannot see what they were not conditioned to perceive, and the doctor's recursive subroutine is an excellent parallel to that. It was certainly no coincidence that only the two Delta Quadrant natives were initially the ones to think the situation was wrong, as they didn't have the same kind of conditioning the rest of the crew had. "From the Mouths of Babes" epitomizes that truth and makes one look at the hard fact of prejudice. Way to go! What a story! |
Stella McCoy 2002-12-23 . chapter 1Gaaaaah, why do I have to quit jumping off of roofs? I was trying to see Santa Claus, not commit suicide...anyway, you totally forgot to mention that *I*, the great Pisces, came up with the title. Snootchie. *gasp* Societal taboo, here, in public?! Egad! Oy vay! Bozhe moi! Anyway, I don't know why I bother to review yours. I'm the beta; you already *know* what I think. And by the way, it's *your* turn to write in the *lightning* NOTEBOOK *lightning*, RROE, the Interlude, and the "we wish" file. Hop to it, girl! Just cuz it's the holidays is no reason to slack off! Sheesh. I'm working on the Ares/Chakotay thing as we speak. Really, I am. *Margaret enters* "No she's not! She lies!"
"Shut up, Margaret! I am too working on it!" *Sisters squabble and vacant the area* |
