A good first chapter, well told. Reminds me a little of Diane Duane's Spock's World the bits inbetween the main story which explains the history of Vulcan. I hope you are going to continue with it.

Aside from the introduction, and the references to logic, it is hard to tell that this is Star Trek related. You might consider changing the character names (they are very vulcan sounding) and sell it to a sci fi literary magazine as a original work.

Whoa. This was quite the psychological analysis of the evolution of Vulcan culture! Wow. :) I liked it, actually, even though I think that living only by logic (as Saela wishes to do) is not really a perfect or happy or healthy way to live. But I can see a culture extolling logic arising from people facing things like she does here in your story. Very powerful story IMHO! It sounds like (from your summary) that there will be more of these Vulcan vignettes. Will there be? I would love to read them!

This is rather a new twist - I like it alot - I think that you should continue - I see no glaring errors - maybe a note or two when the time frame switches but that is all - you have a good ear for prose and I hope that you keep going
