I like what you've done -- it sort of leaves it open to the reader, but have a heart -- give up some more info. Maybe write the dying scene and what exactly happened, after all, you brought it up and said they fought to save this person for hours, but failed. I think I know by what means the mystery person died, but I'm still unsure of who it was. Please consider writing a companion piece -- it doesn't have to be some long magnum opus -- just something. Have mercy!
