I KNEW I'd read that passage somewhere! I couldn't for the life of me remember what book it was. Generally, if it's fantasy, and in no way resembles Piers Anthony, I've read it. Except the last one in the Heritage of Shanarra series. I got a bit bored. And anything from 3 onward in the Magic Kingdom For Sale series. Those were horribly written.
I recommend The Sword, The Ring and The Chalice trilogy by Deborah Chester, or pretty much any of the Dragonlance saga by various authors.
