Okay, I agree completly with you on the downsides of the Harry Potter series, but it is still a fun thing to read. The only thing we must keep in mind is that these ARE children's books, so the plot and symbolism have to be obvious enought for 11-year-olds, not our intellectually pumped minds. THe only thing I disagree with you on is Tolkien... I really did enjoy LOTR (I am VERY dissapointed with the movies).

Personally, I like reading (and writing) fan fiction over the original text. If you find well written stories that expand some of her not-so-dynamic characters, it is a real joy to read.

Your rant is very thought out. I love ranting, it's so much fun, but the trouble is that you need someone around who doesn't mind your ranting. (My best friend is sick of me ranting about how out of tune Christine was in The Phantom of the opera play I went to, along with my rants about how I can't get Frodo out of my head and it's all her fault because I keep seeing him everywhere and it's driving me TO INSANITY) and another thought...

I don't understand - you say you'd rather be in an elevator with a Harry Potter book than Tolkein's series ANY day? Does that mean you don't enjoy Lord of the Rings? WOW you're a first. I've never really heard someone say they liked Harry Potter better than Lord of the Rings, surprisingly, everyone likes them both equally.

Ah well, I like the way you think. You put a lot of thought into your rants, I can see that. I think you're one of my fave authors on this whole site and I've only read three of your things! Wow, I really wanna talk to you sometime, you seem to have many interesting things to say. :)

Yes I have read Mad, and I while I have not yet read the diskworld or Iron Dragon Books, I entirely agree with everything u said in the forward. And I don't think Bill Weasley is gay, but u portray a number of straight characters as gay, so what ever floats ur boat.

Off topic: I agree with you about Tolkien. There was a contest at a local library once, and people voted for their favorite books from a list of about 10. Anyhow, more people voted for THE HOBBIT than THE GIVER by Lois Lowry. There were a lot of other good books that didn't win, but that's the only one I can think of right now. THE HOBBIT, of all things.

I agree with most of the above (specially the bit about Tolkien). About "The Iron Dragon's Daughter"... well, I haven't read it, so I don't know. But maybe I will. Btw, ever read the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philipp Pullman? You should, I bet you'd like it. And yes, I do read Mad Magazine... sometimes.
