abuseWhen I first read this, I immediately fell in love with it. I loved your portrayl of Giles. You capture his sense of duty and longing to escape perfectly. Fantastic job.

abuseJust wanted to pop by to clear up any misunderstandings...

Sorry if this wasn't clear, but the fic's not supposed to be right after Giles finds out he's to be a Watcher - which as tweedisgood pointed out, took place when he was ten. I assumed that his father probably gave him more than one speech about duty and sacrifice over the course of his adolescence. :-)

Also, for the age thing, I was going by Band Candy, where Buffy says, "Giles at sixteen. Less 'together guy,' more 'bad magic, hates the world, ticking time bomb guy.'" I figured that if the Ripper of Band Candy is roughly equivalent to Giles at sixteen, he probably would have shown seeds of Ripper at thirteen. But of course, YMMV and everyone no doubt has their own private version of Giles's childhood.

Anyway, uh, carry on. And thanks for the reviews, guys.

abuseGonna be a tad picky here and say that the "tiresome speech" about duty and sacrifice was when Giles was ten, rather than thirteen.

I can see Giles like this at sixteen or seventeen; at thirteen, not so much. He seems to have had quite a run at "conformist" before the big break out at 21.

A good stab at English speech patterns, though a few Americanisms slipped in here and there...

abuseThis was great. You set thirteen year old Giles up perfectly-- I can easily see how someone would ruin the poor boy, but you've written a moment of transition wonderfully. Very nice.

abuseInteresting idea. I wager Buffy rarely thinks about Giles at this age.
