That was a VERY interesting interpretation of events. I like it! This is very well written in all respects - so much for constructive criticism, but I can't find anything wrong! This is descriptive, evocative, and in-character.

It's frightening, that Yami gets more lost from himself with every strengthening of his bond with Yugi, and it fits rather neatly into canon ... and then came Battle City and the Memory World [...hmph]. Would those arcs, where Yami comes into his own identity, be considered AU to this story? And thank you -somuch- for giving Yugi his own personal pre-Yami darkness. The 'pure light eternal' thing most people assign to him hacks me off deeply.

A very interesting prequel, especially because of the angle from which it looks at the yami/hikari relationship. I liked the way you used speech-patterns and word-choice to distinguish between the two speakers ; it gave their conversation an almost mystic mood, even if it never got to the point of being old-fashioned (which might have happened if you hadn't picked your words so carefully).
A fascinating and engaging read. ^_^ Very enjoyable.
