Experimental 1/10/04 . chapter 1
This fic has two big things going for it: Rough sex, school uniforms (gakuran, I presume), and hints of misogyny. . . . OK, I guess that's three, and I am a bit partial . . . The descent into sin is so crucial to these characters, though. What's more, it is all wonderfully written and wonderfully in-character, which, come to think of it, is bigger than the other big things.
First off, the present-past-present-tense structure makes it really clear what is happening when, so there's good use of time-space. So is the theme of cause and effect to show how the characters came to this point, really. And schooldays flashbacks are so under-appreciated; it has a touch of Mishima to it for that ("Martyrdom" specifically), which I love.
Other pluses, your portrayal of Oriya as an accomplice - not that he just KNEW about the murders but was actually WITNESS to at least some of them. That adds a whole 'nother layer to his character, even though it makes him much more complicated and enigmatic. However, that is what makes him credible as a friend and a human. Even though it's from Oriya's perspective, there's still enough of those out-of-place introverted statements of Muraki's present to keep us guessing as well. The sophistication of your style really helps, too. It flows smoothly and just echoes guilt. Very well done. I would love to see more Yami fiction in this sort of vein from this author.
Morase 1/8/04 . chapter 1
Wow, I can't tell you enough how much I loved this little piece. The relationship between Muraki and Oriya has alway fascinated me in the YnM series; it was wonderful to see it from such a tantalizing perspective. Thank you for the great read.
