I was the one who requested the "non-romantic" fic rec at WIKTTmisc and I am so glad you posted the link to this story! Lovely, I will have to go and look up the original it is based on now. Reminds me of the magical realism stories of Borges. Very impressive--eerie and sweet at the same time!
