Cute! I absolutely loved the banter between those two, although the ending did seem rushed. I also understand the reason. Wish there was a little more.

so far I quite like your OC, just ignore the mary sue accusations - I mean, even if Val was a Mary sue - who cares when the story is good?
About your plot: it promises to stay interesting... I just wish you wouldn't change your perspective/POV every other sentence, I find it quite unnerving.
Or, as a guy in my creative writing class put it: writing is the art of leaving out bits...
