Someone did something very similar a few years back and again it was the same . Short to the point and sad. Nice job.

Not a bad little short-fic. As you said, doesn't fit anywhere, and Rei, of course, would not be smiling at any time, with 3 exceptions. Still and all, nice writing style, no errors, easy to read formatt. You should do some more stories. Perhaps keep them on the serious side, since you do that rather well, but then again, I haven't read any of your other work, so I don't know if you do humor or any other genre well or not, I guess.
One suggestion: Add more description to your work. You can do a lot to add to the mood/feel of the story if you add more descriptions of places/dress/weather and other such things in.
All in all, good fic.
