This is absolutely brilliant. It's a beautiful insight into Eowyn's thoughts in Minis Tirith and a great perspective into the relationship between her and Faramir.

An intriguing premise, and you make it work. It is tempting to apply real-world cynicism to the sudden romance of two battle-scarred and lonely people who meet under the shadow of imminent destruction. And it was something of a pattern with Eowyn, seeking escape from her 'cage' by latching onto a handsome and powerful stranger. (not blaming Eowyn, she lived in Middle-Earth, not our world, and her options and expectations were far different)
But not many people bring up any conscious attempt of Eowyn's to escape her situation by deliberately manipulating Faramir into a proposal.
I also wonder whether Faramir's sudden attraction to Eowyn might have resulted less from true love and more from his recent losses of brother and father, his feelings of confusion and helplessness in a world that was hurtling into oblivion or change without his even being able to fight for it (at the time he met Eowyn, Faramir was restricted to convalescence at the Houses of Healing), and then his meeting this beautiful and sad young woman who needs rescuing. I've always thought that Faramir likes to be needed; and Eowyn's beauty and battle-renown would have made her all the more appealing. Though I doubt that Faramir would have realized such motivation; he would have felt the attraction, deemed it love, and honorably pursued marriage.
I like the way you've left the future of Faramir and Eowyn open: they could have a disastrous marriage, with Eowyn always having to manipulate and contrive since she does not truly love Faramir and Faramir perceptive enough to eventually realize it, and Eowyn's never resolved feelings towards the King that Faramir serves eating away at their marriage like a cancer. Or Eowyn could come to at least respect and like Faramir, possibly love him, realize he's a lot better for her than Aragorn could ever be, and sensibly work to make a good life for them, and learn to face Aragorn as a friend.

I liked this on the whole (even though I do think Éowyn actually loved Faramir) but in any case you have a very clear, correct style - Éowyn's feelings are well conveyed, and there is a distinctness (so to speak) to the writing that make it a real story - not just another Houses of Healing interlude.

This... was satisfying.
Not in a purely romantic sense, at all, but in an acute knowledge of character. I can't say it any better than that. I'm so impressed at your power of description... everything, so well-rounded and complete. And finally-- "She felt a little like singing." Beautiful. I do hope that that means she will eventually fall in love with Faramir. ^_^
Wonderful job. I'll be looking forward to reading more of your work.

This was absolutely awesome! It realisticly showed Eowyn's feelings about her situation at that point in her life. It was sort of melancholy but very realistic. I really liked the way you added flashbacks to enhance the story. I hope you continue this story and end it on a more happier note. The Eowyn angst is pretty depressing and knowing that Eowyn doesn't love Faramir as much as he loves her is heartbreaking. Your writing is beautiful and I really, really hope you continue.

Oh that's horrible! Horrible how good it is--how plausible! I never thought about the text this way, but you've made this version so believable. I'm so depressed now.
How much time did you spend thinking about this? It's brilliant, but so terribly sad. Write something happy, quick quick quick!

I enjoyed your story...although it is sad, that Eowyn does not really love Framir :-(
Can't you continue your story and tell how she finally "learns" to love him (I understand taht she doesn't fall in love again so easily, but you could find a way to describe how she does so later)
Please write more!

Wow! This is *very* unique! Imagine - an interpetation of this scene that neither has Eowyn in love with Faramir or spurning his affections because she is in love with someone else (mostly, Legolas ;P). It's always tricky to write a scene where the character's feelings are in limbo, and it certainly isn't as comfortable or romantic to the reader as reading a passionate exceptance scene, but your intrepretation has a real ring of truth to it. Tolkien himself never gave much indication that Eowyn loved Faramir - as has been pointed out elsewhere, she never answered the question "Do you not love me?"
I've doubted Eowyn's ability to fall out of love with Aragorn and into love with Faramir so quickly, but my romantic sensibilities always told me Faramir was too wonderful not to fall in love with ;). I'd never really thought about this scene in the way you depicted it - all her coy answers as masking her true lack of affection. It's troubling to think that Eowyn would marry willingly for political alliance and freedom, but it's realistic I think.
I always look forward to your stories, and was thrilled when this one popped up in the Eowyn listing. Is it a one shot? I'd really like to see how she grew from this state to one of (hopefully?) loving her husband. Can she really live with a man like Faramir and not come to respect and admire him? Impossible! :)
Anyway, I applaud you for your creative and bold adaptation of this romance and cannot deny my wishs for it to become MORE romantic ;)
