Match in the gas tank, boomboom 2009-08-04 . chapter 1 Very well done!
Great job on Gilbert's character!
Just a few MINOR things to point out:
- At the time the movie takes place, their father had hung himself 17 years ago, not a couple
- "You're the oldest..." Gilbert is not the oldest. Amy is. He is the oldest after Amy, Larry and Janice. (Book reference)
- Don't know if you've read the book, but Mama should be Momma.
- Again, Gilbert was only 7 when his father killed himself
But those are things most people wouldnt notice - just freak obsessed WEGG people like me. Also, you wouldnt really know that if you havent read the book!
I highly recommend it - youd love it if you love Gilbert!
This was amazing, though!!
Very, VERY well done!
Write more Gilbet fics ASAP!

S.J.F 2008-01-03 . chapter 2 Wonderful! Its as if its the writer for Gilbert from the movie. Its so much like the narrative portions of it. Good job! One thing I'd work on though, is separating the past and present. Maybe a line or other some such clue? I did get a bit confused with that. |
Lady Charity 2007-10-16 . chapter 1Awesome story, You have written this very well! I really like the style, and you got Gilbert pretty in character. Aww, poor Arnie, at least he died happy. You're a talented writer!
The only thing I see that's wrong is 'layed'. The word should be laid. |
 aspirer 2006-11-27 . chapter 2*applauds* just beautiful :) congratulations |
distressed cough drop 2006-04-05 . chapter 2This is beautiful writing! The mood of this piece is stunning. Especially with the weather that’s outside my window right now, this put me in a very quiet, introspective mood. Which is nice from time to time :) I like the way you begin and conclude the first chapter with this opposition of tomorrow-yesterday. Nice frame, so to speak.
When she finally emerged she was ravenous. - Beautiful sentence, it sums up so much.
'This place is as good as any' or so Becky says, but how am I to know if I've never been to those places? - This is oh so true. Life is nothing if you don’t go out and see the world. You can always come back and you probably will, but for that you have to go away every once in a while.
I made my decision and went on from there, no room for regrets, and no looking back on what could have been. – This reminds me of the book. Gilbert muses on how he doesn’t do regrets, that regret is a word he has no use for, something along these lines. I can’t really remember because it must be about 10 years since I’ve read the book (gosh that makes me sound old, hihi!), but I remember how that stuck out to me while reading.
Anyway, this was lovely. I think I have to go watch the film again now (although I only have a battered and grainy VHS copy in German :) But still better than nothing, right? Hihi)
Cheers |
Pyrate Rose 2005-01-26 . chapter 2Wow, I think you really got his character down brilliantly.

LalaithPirateWhore 2004-09-26 . chapter 2Brilliant. Very brilliant. You have captured one of the most fathomable movie characters of all time. I certainly can relate to Gilbert in this piece. I love how this is in first person, and I can just hear Gilbert's splendid draw in my head as I read this. You have amazing talent, please do write more. |
ElvenPirate41 2004-09-21 . chapter 2Oh, wow. This fic was so lovely. I too adore Gilbert, and I was so glad to find another WEGG story. Well done! It's so sad.. *sniff*

Dawnie-7 2004-08-28 . chapter 2I have enough difficulty opening my eyes to go through another day because it's going to be the same as the previous one.
Don't you just hate that feeling!
How could I do that to them, scare them like that?
E,it wouldn't be that hard.
Now I sound bitter, on a roll aren’t I.
Ah!I get that feeling all the time with my sister.
I’ve learned everything I’m willing to learn from experience.
Brilliantly said.
If I get too happy I get scared that something bad will happen
I get that all the time, comes from my dad.
Reading this made me realize how much I can relate to him too,go figure :) |
Thoughtless Fish 2004-06-08 . chapter 1It is rare to find someone who can truly capture a character that isn't their own, and you have done just that. Gilbert Grape's personality is one that is hard to put down on paper, because he can be so snide and sarcastic, while on the other hand he can be just so kind-hearted and philosophical. I really appreciate your writing this story, since it seems it has actually been written by Gilbert himself. You're really talented, and I'll surely read the next thing you write. Please let me know if I can ever read one of your original works if you ever get around to writing something not based off of anything else. I've added your story to my Favorite Stories list.
By the way, have you ever read the book "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" by Peter Hedges? I strongly suggest that you do. The movie is different than the book in many ways, but the main story is still the same. |
JackFan2 2004-06-07 . chapter 1BEAUTIFULLY DONE! I think the last line was my absolute favorite!

You just keep growing and going and getting better as a writer. It's a wonderful thing to witness with every thing you post. I feel privileged to see you blossom before my eyes. Some day, we'll be reading your books, mark my words.

Lip Balm 2004-06-06 . chapter 1Awesome. I loved it. I love WEGG. I'm writing one myself and I'm pretty much stuck because I saw the movie a long time ago. I should go rent it again.
All I can say is that this piece is beautiful. Johnny movies certaintly inspires me to write. So much. No matter how bad the Writer's Block is.
Later, friend. |
Dawnie-7 2004-06-06 . chapter 1Amazing work as always when I read something of yours.Yes,WEGG is a awesome movie to own,got mine on my birthday. And yes,Mr.Depp did do an out of this world preformance.
Tomorrow never comes, just keeps on hinting at it, but no matter how many night's I stay up to watch, it never truly reaches us.
Perfectly said.
Need a delivery? Call Gilbert. Something isn't right? Old Gil'll fix it.
I know!And it sucks.
I went back though because I lacked the heart to tell her.
Aw.
So I would get into my truck with the false illusion that I was actually going somewhere, knowing that I'd just turn around and go back again later.
So heart breaking
Becky will be here sooner then and a whole week of tomorrow's awaits.
Absolutly beautiful. |
