Alone in the Desert
2004-06-25 . chapter 1
Intriguing. The irony in this story is thick enough to cut with a knife -- from the name of the ship, to the daughter of Pirate's Swoop becoming a pirate -- and I've always loved irony. Something about your interpretation makes me more forgiving that I usually am to pirate/rogue/assassin/thief fics, perhaps because Alianne is more naturally inclined to this walk of life than her peers.

Yet, something is lacking. The choice of a lawless, potentially violent life seems to be a darker aspect than the Daughter of the Lioness shown to us in canon, one who is moral despite her many less-than-honorable skills. All of this is implied in the fic, as is the choice to distance herself from her family so completely, to cut all ties, detach herself. It is implied, but not fully explored, which is why I have a hard time seeing this piece as a one-shot.

We need to hear Aly say she didn't miss her father for the last eleven years, or hat she missed him but was too afraid of his judgement to return. We need to see her dealing with the consequences of her criminal life, and find out if it bothers her, and if it doesn't, why not. We need to fid out how strongly Calen figures in her decision to stay with the crew of the Trickster.

In short, this story is fascinating and far better-written than most Aly stories to be found, but it is unfinished.
