I love Gaara as a character, and you've perfectly captured him, and the way his past has influenced him. The metaphor about the sand (though I must confess that I though vaguely dirty things at the "sand gets into everything" bit) works very well, and is very true. Sand is impossible to get rid of...

I was surprised to find out that Yashamaru was male as well. He looks a lot like his sister, certainly...
