jordylilly777 1/17/12 . chapter 1Personally I think he looks awsome, and of course who DOESN'T love a guy with an accent? Your right about the christain thing though, you hardly ever see that in movies. I think you hit the nail on the head with this entire story. |
Hayakaze 1/8/10 . chapter 1Nah... I don't like the religious part of Nightcrawler at all, except for the irony. I'm more into the superhuman dexterity and agility, as well as the wall-clinging and especially the teleportation. I, too, first saw Kurt in X2 - that opening scene really left an impression.
As for his personality, he's kind, forgiving, and loyal, despite his appearance. Many other people in his place would probably hate humans, but he manages to keep a positive outlook on life. Angsty emo Kurt is not an attractive Kurt. Also, German!
Basically, I'm saying his faith is quite the opposite of attractive.
They really did miss a lot of his character in the movie... but it still sucks that Alan Cumming didn't want to put up with the makeup for the third movie. Props to Hugh Jackman for being generally cool with stuff.
My history with Nightcrawler, and X-men, includes all four movies (so far), X-men: Evolution, and the X-men sections of the wikipedia and Marvel websites. I'm reluctant to get into the comics due to the multiple continuities and universes, and writers. |
Wish-I-Had-A-Tail 8/18/09 . chapter 1I would like to make a few points regarding your analysis of why many girls (such as myself and evidently, you) have fallen in love with Kurt Wagner, and please don't take offence to any of them, I actually quite liked how you wrote it, it seemed like a good article.
1) This might be the most minor point, but he IS furry, the movie merely found it ttoo complicated. And they changed his appearance a lot: The scars, for example are not canon and his eyes are supposed to be uniformly glowing yellow.
2) His and Rogue are technically foster siblings, so fanfiction pairing htem is kidn of incest. Although the movieverse ones, I guess, arent...
3) I fell in love with comic Kurt Wagner, and admittedly, a little with the evolution comic one. And this is why: His original story, was that when he was found, he was in his hometown of Winzeldorf about to be staked (or, burned at the stake, as Evolution did it) for being a demon. Angsty, yes? But throughout the comic, he seems to be the most happy, well balanced of the team, and always makign jokes, and never hating or those who were afraid of him (which I think they covered well in the movie). That's partly it: His forgiving personality and how he manages to stay so happy against the odds. People's minds have spun him into this man with a great soul, despite many things.
4)Another point of why women love him is the poetic irony of his character itself: A catholic demon. I am not catholic myself, I am a jew sho does believe in G-d, but somehing about that contradiction of his character really strikes you as deep and beautiful.
5) I fully agree with you on the accent, that is definitely part of the sexual attraction.
6) I do not believe Alam Cumming 'nailed the role' as you put it: I think that he took his own spin at the character and made him shy, for reasons that I cannot imagine. Nowhere in the comics(including the Nightcrawler mini series, which I strongly urge you to read if you haven't already) was he ever shy, and the movie never brought in the resemblance to a demon into the Nightcrawler persona.
7) I believe, no offense intended, that you cannot make such a short analysis of why women everywhere have fallen in love with the characer, if you have only seen one version of him, and so not know of the past that shapes him up to BE so loveable.
I really hope that I didn't discourage you about your editorial, even though I'm reviewing five years too late, many people seemed to love it and agree with you, but learn more about his past and various incarnations of the character (canon, evolution, ultimate,) and then maybe write another one when you have gotten a good idea of how much there really is to Kurt Wagner.

Arathine 9/20/08 . chapter 1Well, comic book wise, which is canon, he's furry. It was too complicated for the movie just so you know. Comic wise again, he never was that outspoken religiously near the beginning of the franchise. The point of the editorial is sort of lost near the end, but nonetheless a good effort.
I saw Nightcrawler in Evolution myself, but I like him for his attitude towards religion and how he acts in general. |
aliveinchrist 12/6/06 . chapter 1 that is so true. one of the reason I love Kurt is his faith. you don't see it mentioned much these days, and it's nice to see God glorfied. So you are right. But I do think he looks col because of his tail. and may god help you with you faith. peace out. |
ChestnutBrumby 8/23/06 . chapter 1I do admit, my obsession with Kurt did begin after X2 - I was heartbroken when I discovered he was absent from The Last Stand (*swats Fox*)
A few notes: Yes, Kurt's accent is attractive (As are many accents, indeed!) although I was pulled to something a little more pysical as well as the strength of his faith an the decency of his soul. Nightcrawler moves with incredible grace - flippnig, jumping, even walking, he's so aware of his movements. That's attractive.
Also, I think it was the hint of a relationship with Ororo what pulled me in. *nods* I don't just get obsessed with the cute guy... I fall for the whole relationship, and Kurt and Ororo were just a great opposites attract but fit so well case. (My icon in Deviantart is pciture of them together :D)
The last reason I find Kurt sexy? Call me weird, but that tail is so damnned attractive. |
Kate Van Helsing 8/19/06 . chapter 1 HELLO, FELLOW KURT LOVER! You are SO right, Kurt is the ultimate guy! Although this is BRILLIANT, I have to say that how he looks is part of the appeal for me. He's just so CUTE! Great work! |
DemonicBrat 13 7/24/06 . chapter 1Yeah I totally agree! Kurt is so COOL! He actully became my fav character when I saw him on x-men evolution. I can't belevie that the didn't have him in X3. The jerks. I haven't X3 yet but I've heard from a friend that he's not in it. My excitment to see the movie went out the window. I really wanted to see what happened between him and storm. |
Anonymouuus 5/28/06 . chapter 1 Er, I don't mean to be rude, but this kinda irked me with how you act as if you know alot about Nightcrawler's character when you've probably only seen him in the movie.
The fact that you don't know he has fur proves how much you know about him in the first place.
I have to disagree with almost all of this from my personal perspective.
I love Kurt primarily because of what he stands for and what he does in the comics and how even though he has a strong faith he doesn't let that get in the way of his swashbuckling mannerisms. I personally really am not a big fan of Catholicism because of it's history, actually, almost all of Christianity can get on my nerves because of their conservatism, but Kurt's faith is such a contrast. A reason why he's so appealing is because even though he belogns to a quite conservative sect of religion that rejects those who are different, he's a mutant, and he's supposed to look like a demon. I don't think the movie did him complete justice in that they made him seem a little more meek and him and Storm I can't see together that well and the fact that they didn't at all talk about Mystique and him and that kind of stuff, but Alan Cummings did a good job anywho. And I think you are being kind of shallow... you barely went in depth about his character at all, and just kept going back to his appearance and everything, yet you were saying basing such fangirling on appearance isn't good. Ambiguity, anyone?
And, uh. Rogue/Nightcrawler? Their like, siblings, man. That's kinda.. :\. Not cool?
But considering the general, cliche, fan populous of the Movie Nightcrawler this is easily applicable to them, because their mostly just girls who can't see anything past surface traits, blue fur, tail, scars, and his faith.
I'll shut up. I don't want to offend anyone :\. |
purple roze 5/19/06 . chapter 1you go girl, hit the nail right on the head with that analizeing power. |
Haracacash 3/5/06 . chapter 1 hey I think kurt is good looking, I like blue skin(that dosen't look like it's fur) I think it's because I like the how the guy who plays him looks cause I liked him when he was Boris(who was russian)a computer geek in goldeneye (James bond movie) and I like his tail. so yeah he does look good and his personality rocks. bleh. |
Mizamour 6/6/05 . chapter 1Awesome! I love this! Such a great analysis! You;ve put into words the reasons why we love characters like this, taking it far beyond the "well, I don't know, he's just awesome!" level! This is great! I completely agree with all of your points. You're such a great writer! Wow! |
Alexandra P. Useless 2/8/05 . chapter 1Exellent food for thought. I find your point of view intriguing... and *true*. I'm a bor nand raised believer, and wile Kurt Wagner is not at this point my favorite charrecter, it was him that first dragged me into X-men. Beautiful thing, to me any way, that religion played such a role in his life. The faith based comments, his refferences to God, his prayer at the end of the movie... Anyway, that's me, rambling. I Just wanted to say that I very much agree with your thoughts... So... ah... Yeah... |
flit 10/16/04 . chapter 1 I dunno about Logan's testosterone, but have you ever seen Hugh Jackman? Maybe it's against Nightcrawler's religion, but Alan Cummings was pictured in a sparkly jean kilt.
That's a bad sign for the man's sexuality.
But on a more serious note, I agree with (most) of your points. Accents are sexy. Religion, particularly Catholicism, is intriguing and not a frequently used "plot device."
On the other hand, a true comics fan wouldn't have permitted the director to keep his skin if Kurt Wagner wasn't at least moderately religious. I'm debating if he deserves life for making my second favorite (after Remy "Gambit" LeBeau) character lose his fur.
I suppose it's a great deal harder to do than blue skin, but it's still disappointing.
I guess what I'm trying to say, in a roundabout manner, is that aside from a minor disagreement (I'm personally quite fond of fangs, blue is my second favorite color, and Kurt Wagner is, to say in brief, attractive to ME) this...essay? really touches on something I'd never really thought about...how alluring religion is, and the fact that so few good movies include it.
I'll shut up now... |
Kitsume 9/5/04 . chapter 1Kurt's personality is what makes him extremely attractive. I mean...he's practicly what every woman wants! He is loyal/faithful, kind, and respectful(not to mention numerous other things.) I've been a Nightcrawler fan ever since I saw him in X2. I also love men with accents *. I really hope Alan Cumming will come back too. I also hope you read CassieKnight's Nightcrawler fics. I want to write some about him once I'm done with my current fic that isnt up yet! :D |
