It happens to have it's origins in Celtic culture, being that of Scotland, Wales, Ireland etc. It was a yearly tradition to satisfy wandering spirits, putting them at ease. This eventually spread through Britain, and took the form it has now. It just happens to be really popular in America, they created the 'Trick or Treating' phrase (traditionall called 'Guising' over here)

Otherwise, a good story, nice writing technique.
