Hmm, were there in fact Imperial forces on Alderaan at this time? I wouldn't have said so, but I guess they could be because Alderaan stayed neutral. So--pretty good prose, and this is a very interesting possible event, a very different look on a scene. I'd like to see what Ranguard thought about the desctruction of this whole planet he had served on besides "Captain Ranguard did feel pity for what was in store.". I know that this story was written quite a while ago, so I shall not critique without antecedent your nonfictionlike, and therefor boringish, first paragraph of impersonal information about the captain. I did doubt that the Imperial soldiers would have their families with them--I would not say that they would care to have them with them in the service. But that is another point which is not entirely useful to you, so pardon it if you wish. Good story, really--it has its worth in the final paragraphs. Generally, your prose is fine.
