"the earth spirit seemed that he was" --> that sounds a little funny. I would've put "seemed to be trying"

"monkey because curious" --> shouldn't it be 'became'?

"one box he promised" --> the first part of the sentence is 'it had been' so shouldn't this be 'one box he had promised'?

"It would be Sanzo’s favorite" --> 'it would have been'

"he empathized" --> emphasized

Sorry for being so picky... I'm in my English teacher mode today. Anyway, I loved this fic, especially this part:
